Kings of Leon – Analysis of Magazine Advertisement

The main element of the magazine advert is the picture in the centre of the page. This features a distorted picture of band members. This has had a green filter on it due to the size of the image it takes up the majority of the page. As a result this is likely the first element people will see. The band members have had their faces painted and then cropped in such a way that it forms a picture of an owl. This related to the albums name “Only by the Night” as owls usually hunt at night. The lead singers of the band have had their eyes featured in the image. This makes them more recognisable and since they are main members of the band fans will immediately know who they are.

There is a banner at the top and at the bottom of the advert. At the top the name of the band (Kings of Leon) is written in white text. This text contrasts the black background and therefore is fairly eye-catching. This lets the audience know who made the songs featured on the album and stands out from the other text which uses much darker colours. The banner at the bottom of the advert shows the name of the album, a release date for it, and some institutional logos. The name of the album is the largest element on the bottom banner and is written in the same colour as the iconic image, this gives the audience something to reference the album with and goes well with the iconic image in the centre of the page. The release date is the only text on the page in red. This doesn’t stand out as much as the other text on the page but is the text is still fairly large and therefore is not obscured by the other text. This text is needed as fans will want to know when the album is available for them. The institutional logos are the smallest element on the page, but is a very common element of magazine advertisements. Due to this we may take this and make one for our magazine advertisement.
